Empangeni small business owners draw a line

The City of uMhlathuze said amicable discussions had been held and the city would apply by-laws to address the problems

‘BUSH mechanics, foreigners, drug dealers and all illegal traders must go’

These are the sentiments of business owners in Empangeni Rail who took their grievances over illegal traders to the streets yesterday (Monday).

Angry protesters, mostly workshop owners, complained that unlicensed mechanics are mushrooming in the area, business burglaries are getting out of control and streets are left in a filthy state.

During the demonstration, protesters blocked Tanner Road and ensured traffic was brought to a standstill.

‘We are losing customers because of all these people operating illegally in our area. We pay rent and rates for our businesses, but foreigners operate on the streets for free.

‘They sell drugs and this has increased the number of addicts who continue to break into our businesses to steal stock. Our drains are also blocked because of the oil spills,’ said Small Business Workshop Chairperson, Zithulele Ngcobo.

Business owners claimed they previously submitted their concerns to the uMhlathuze Municipality, demanding urgent intervention to restore order.

‘They promised to do so, but nothing is being done. Blocking the roads is our only option now and if they don’t take us seriously, we will be closing other major roads as well.

‘We are done talking to them and hoping for a reaction. We pay rates and taxes and we want the municipality to take decisive action right now.

‘This has to stop and the municipality will have to take this matter very seriously,’ said Ferobrake owner, Cornelius van der Linde.

According to municipal Communications Manager, Mdu Ncalane, city officials met with the group to establish their grievances.

‘Amicable discussions were held that will see the city apply its by-laws to address the problems.’

By midday on Monday, the protest was called off and no reports of violence or injuries were received.
