Mhlathuze Water shuts off disposal line after gypsum leak
Clean-up operations have begun and all gypsum effluent has been transferred back to Foskor dams
AN investigation into the cause of a gypsum leak on C-line, which is used by Foskor to dispose of its gypsym, has been launched by Mhlathuze Water (MW).
The leak was detected earlier today (Sunday) and the water utility said in a statement that it has instructed Foskor to cease all discharge operations to allow for emergency repairs.

‘In line with MW’s emergency response protocols, Mhlathuze Water has notified key stakeholders of the incident, including the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Ocean and Coast Unit at national and provincial levels, as well as the local and district municipalities,’ said Mhlathuze Water spokesperson, Siyabonga Maphumulo.
Clean-up operations have begun and all gypsum effluent has been transferred back to Foskor dams.
‘As a precautionary measure, an environmental impact assessment as a result of the leak will be conducted,’ said Maphumulo.
This includes the appointment of a rehabilitation expert to implement an approved rehabilitation plan where it is deemed necessary.
Maphumulo said no effluent discharge would be allowed on the affected pipeline until repairs have been satisfactorily effected.
