VW details updated kombi range

The new kombi range is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in January

VW SA released details and pricing for its new T6.1 kombi range, which is expected to dock in January.

The facelifted T6.1 range will comprise 15 derivatives – a pick-up version in single and double cab form, a panel van, crew bus, the classic kombi and the luxurious Caravelle and California buses.

Enhancements to the exterior are mostly found up front where a larger grille is more closely integrated, with a new bumper and redesigned headlamps fitted.

Customers will be able to choose from six new wheel designs, six fresh exterior colours and seven newly combined two-tone options.

Inside, VW fitted a new facia equipped with an additional shelf in front of the driver, and there’s also a larger tray (designed to accommodate a smartphone and complete with optional inductive charging), while the air vents have also been updated for easier use.

VW says it also gave the T6.1 range a new steering wheel.

The Caravelle and California models get an upgraded version of the ‘Discover Pro’ media system with navigation (the latter is offered as an option on the Kombi Trendline Plus), while both models will feature VW’s 10.25-inch digital cockpit.

A key update, according to VW, is the adoption of electro-mechanical power steering, opening up access to various new driver assistance systems.

As for forward motivation, the T6.1 range will launch locally with three 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engines.

The first will make 81kW/250Nm and is driven through a five-speed manual gearbox, while the second generates 110kW/340Nm with gear changes taken care of by a seven-speed DSG box.

The third version of this 2.0-litre turbo-diesel will make 146kW and 450Nm, also featuring a seven-speed DSG.

VW says the pick-up, panel van and crew bus range will be sold with a three-year/60 000km service plan and a two-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, while the Kombi, Caravelle and California will each feature a five-year/60 000km maintenance plan and a three-year/120 000km warranty.

As far as pricing goes, VW says it plans to offer the utility models at a starting price of R412 800, while the Kombi version will start at R697 700, and the Caravelle will cost R1 149 400 and the California R1 196 500.
