Quick support for Nkandla veld fire victims

Food parcels and blankets were given to those who lost everything in the blaze

GOVERNMENT officials visited 25 families in Nkandla last Tuesday after a weekend veld fire destroyed a number of homes in the area.

KZN MEC for Social Development, Nonhlanhla Khoza, Nkandla Mayor Thami Ntuli and King Cetshwayo District Mayor, Nonhle Mkhulisi, visited victims in Vumanhlamvu Village, distributing food parcels and blankets to those who’d been left destitute by Saturday’s fire.

Ntuli and his executives also visited the families on Sunday to provide further assistance, while Khoza dispatched a team of social workers to conduct an assessment of all the affected residents in Nkandla, uMlalazi and Mthonjaneni.

‘We are thankful there was no loss of life,’ said Khoza.

She said the visit allowed her to obtain first-hand understanding of the situation and what would be needed to assist.

‘All three spheres of government – provincial, district and local – will return to the area with further interventions.’

Mayor Mkhulisi assured the families that government would work hard to address their hardships.

‘We are grateful to the department’s quick response, ensuring the affected families in these three municipalities have food.’

Mayor Ntuli said the municipality would support the affected families with school uniforms for the children, and building material to rebuild their homes.
