Based on the Wildtrak, the Thunder package features updated styling but no significant mechanical changes, and besides the Absolute Black shown on this page, it also comes in Sea Grey, Frozen White and Moondust Silver colour schemes.

The most notable feature is the three-dimensional front grille and the Thunder badging.

Both feature red detailing, while front and rear lights receive darkened bezels, and a ‘Thunder’ graphic (also in red) takes pride of place on the lower portion of both front doors.

The Ranger Thunder rolls on Darkened 18-inch alloy wheels and there are skid plates for protection when going off the tar.

An open door reveals sill plates with red illumination and black floor mats plus ‘Thunder’ branded seats with red contrast stitching.

The Ford Ranger Thunder also benefits from numerous practical additions in the load compartment like a black roller shutter, and customers have a choice of load box accessories, including a roller cover or large utility stowage box.

As we already mentioned, the Ranger Thunder is based on the Wildtrak, which means buyers get to choose between the new 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel (157kw/500Nm) and the old faithful 3.2-litre, five-cylinder turbo-diesel (147kW/470Nm).

The bi-turbo sends its power to those dark alloys through a 10-speed automatic transmission while the burly 3.2 utilises a six-speed auto.

The Ranger Thunder is now available from Ford dealers with a starting price of R736 000 for the 2.0-litre 4×2 model.

Pricing includes a four-year/120 000km warranty and a six-year/90 000km service plan with 15 000km intervals.
