Free the jailbirds!

The annual CANSA Jail 'n Bail fund-raiser has gone virtual this year

THREE Richards Bay crime busters have been jailed and are seeking the help of the community to set them free.

Richards Bay SAPS captains, Michelle Michael and Debbie Ferreira, and Community Policing Forum (CPF) member, Tania Alger, find themselves behind bars, charged with a charitable cause – the CANSA Jail ‘n Bail fund-raiser.

The annual event is hosted by CANSA Richards Bay Care Centre, with funds raised going towards CANSA’s programmes and projects.

Bail has been set at R10 000 each, and the community is urged to open their wallets and help free the women by Monday, 31 August.

This year, the fund-raising event moves to a virtual platform, with funds going towards CANSA’s programmes and projects.

All three are passionate supporters of CANSA.

Captain Ferreira has been working with CANSA Richards Bay for many years, ensuring safety and compliance at all outdoor events, and assisting with fund-raising promotions.

Captain Michael is, herself, an ovarian cancer survivor.

‘I live to share my testimony, and offer hope to those affected by cancer. I am a supporter of CANSA and am paying tribute to my family through this fund-raiser, as well as honouring my late Ma (grandmother).’

Alger’s passion for the community motivated her to support the worthwhile initiative.

‘Working with the community as a CPF member, and in my profession within education, I’ve seen the effect of cancer on families,’ she said.

‘I’m hoping more can be done to create awareness about this disease, which is sometimes a silent killer.’

The three jailbirds have challenged Zululanders and local businesses to support the event, and to host initiatives to generate the target of R30 000.

To sweeten the deal, the three ladies will dye their hair pink when all funds have been raised.
