One killed in N2 truck accident near Hluhluwe

Emergency services continue to battle the blaze which has spread to grass and bush adjacent to the road

THE fire caused by the N2 tanker accident earlier today (Sunday) is yet to be extinguished and the road remains closed until further notice.

The accident, involving two tankers and a side-tipper truck, occurred shortly after 10am between Petroport and the Hluhluwe off-ramp.

According to witnesses, the two tankers were travelling in a northerly direction when one attempted to overtake the other.

The side-tipper truck was travelling south, towards the tankers, and was unable to pull into the emergency lane as this was obstructed by an abandoned motor car.

The three trucks collided and all were quickly engulfed in flames.

Emergency services continue to battle the blaze, which has spread to bush and grass adjacent to the road.

Robert McKenzie, KZN Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson, earlier urged motorists to not venture too close to the accident scene after at least one car, parked too close to the scene, quickly went up in flames.

Reports at this stage are that two of the three truck drivers survived the accident.

Hluhluwe SAPS and the fire brigade were commended by witnesses as arriving on scene within minutes of being alerted.

The N2 remains closed in the vicinity and motorists are being diverted to the gravel road via Bushlands.
