Premier Sihle Zikalala has called for urgent action

KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala is calling for urgent action after the province surpassed the 100 000 mark in terms of Covid-19 cases this week.

Addressing the media today (Wednesday), he said the number of coronavirus cases is skyrocketing along with the death rate.

‘As of today, we have 100 494 reported cases, with 42 213 of those still active.

‘Sadly, we have lost 1 523 people to this epidemic, while a total of 56 758 have recovered,’ Zikalala said.

The province has surpassed the Western Cape as the main Covid-19 hot spot and has been reporting the highest rate of new infections in the country since the beginning of August.

‘We want to sound the alarm bells that we are now right in the storm and on the verge of becoming the epicenter of this deadly pandemic in SA.

‘Many more people will die if we don’t change our behaviour.’

Zikalala noted that public gatherings remain a problem.

‘What is concerning is that in some parts of our province we have noticed that many people are frequenting places of entertainment and other gatherings, which poses a serious risk of rampant infection.

‘Let us change the way we behave because it really is now in our hands to conquer this pandemic. Let us not compromise our families and those we love because of our irresponsible behaviour.’
