Fishing still off-limits at Port of Richards Bay

Some popular fishing spots in Richards Bay remain off-limits to anglers

DESPITE recreational fishing being permitted during lockdown Level 3, it remains prohibited within the Port of Richards Bay.

The areas which are off-limits to local anglers include the casuarinas, Naval Island, small craft harbour and Tuzi Gazi Waterfront.

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) said the prohibition is necessary because of a lack of security resources available within these areas to monitor visitor behaviour and ensure compliance with Covid-19 regulations.

Fishing at the dredger reclaim berth near Alkantstrand, the north headlands en route to the helipad and port operational areas, including rivers and estuaries, have also been barred.

‘TNPA’s obligation is the preservation of life, protection of its assets and safety of operations.

‘We thank local fishing enthusiasts for their cooperation and trust they will enjoy the other available amenities within Richards Bay and surrounding areas.

‘We urge the community to stay safe during these challenging times,’ said Port Manager, Thami Sithole.
