Community trust donates laptops to students

The trust has, to date, sponsored a number of students pursuing studies in a variety of fields

SIXTEEN students, funded by the Sokhulu Community Public Benefit Trust, have received much-needed laptops to assist them with their studies.

The trust provided this donation to allow students in rural communities to access study material online, amid the closure of institutions of higher learning as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown.

The students, who are pursuing careers in science, technology and agriculture, among others, have also been supplied with data.

‘Since 2010, the Sokhulu trust has contributed full bursaries to local youth who meet the criteria,’ said a spokesperson for the trust. ‘They have since enrolled at various accredited universities and training institutions in South Africa.

‘The trust has, so far, sponsored a number of students pursuing studies which provide skills in plumbing, welding, fitting, boiler making, and other related fields.’

University of KwaZulu-Natal Bachelor of Chemistry student, Busisiwe Mthembu, expressed gratitude for the laptop, saying she will no longer need to go to the university’s computer laboratory to do her assignments.

Simphiwe Khumalo, a Bachelor of Science student at the University of Zululand, also welcomed the initiative as he had been struggling to access his learning material using only a cellphone.
