SARS SMS not a hoax

SARS implemented a new, automatic tax assessment system this year, which calculates tax returns on behalf of people

SARS implemented a new, automatic tax assessment system this year, which calculates tax returns on behalf of people.

Millions of South Africans have already received an SMS from SARS, requesting they log onto their e-filing account and accept the calculated tax return, or make amendments.

To allay concerns, the revenue service has confirmed that the message is not a hoax.

The initiative was announced by SARS commissioner, Edward Kieswetter, who explained that taxpayers should use e-filing to submit tax return because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. More than three million automatic assessments have already been done this season.

Digital functions and self-help services have been enhanced to prevent people having to visit SARS branches.

‘More than 30 additional digital functions have been added in the past 100 days, and we will continue to enhance the features during this tax season,’ he said.
