Ample fishing along the KZN north coast

Despite most catches weighing in under the 5kg mark, there has also been the odd bomber, so it's worth not going too light on the tackle

FOR those anglers willing to make the trip up north, the rewards have been worthwhile for both deep anglers, as well as the rock-and-surf fraternity.

Boat-based fishermen have had their fair share of snoek over the past week, with Blythedale proving to be the most consistent area.

Despite most catches weighing in under the 5kg mark, there has also been the odd bomber, so it’s worth not going too light on the tackle.

The key to success has reportedly been fillet baits and Strike Pro Magic Minnows; while the bottom fishing lads have filled their hatches with geelbek, tuna and dagas.

The rock-and surf-fraternity has witnessed substantial edible action.

Bronze bream have been predominant around most of the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, with the Westbrook-to-Ballito section most productive.

The Cape stumpnose has been available for most anglers, and a simple ground bait trace with a prawn or squid bait on a 1/0 size hook has proved successful; while a 20lb hook snoot is ideal for the smaller fish.

Those looking for bigger fish are well-advised to stick to the Tugela River area where the kob have been active.
