Police union concerned over ‘challenges with decontamination in police stations’

More than 50 police stations in KZN have been affected by Covid-19 cases in recent weeks

AS more than 50 police stations in KZN have been affected by Covid-19 cases in recent weeks – including stations within the Zululand region – the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) has urged its members not to expose themselves to unsafe environments.

In a statement issued earlier this week, POPCRU said the province was running short of chemicals for decontamination of police stations, as well as a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE).

‘This poses a serious threat in spreading the Covid-19 virus within the SAPS working environment,’ said POPCRU spokesperson Nthabeleng Molefe.

‘It further destroys all the efforts made to curb the spread of the virus in our police stations in the province.’

Molefe said it is ‘reckless and irresponsible’ of the department in failing to provide the necessary chemicals and equipment.

‘We call our shop stewards to be vigilant and ensure that station commissioners and commanders adhere to the regulations and protocols for lockdown,’ he said.

Responding to the statement, Brigadier Jay Naicker said all police station commanders are mandated to collect PPE from the provincial office, and that PPE is always available for collection.
