Task team to probe local protests

Last week, KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala released a statement, stating that the provincial council is extremely concerned about the service delivery disruptions in the district

THE KZN Executive Council is to appoint a task team to probe ongoing service delivery protest disruptions within the King Cetshwayo district.

Over the past two weeks, angry residents have been demonstrating, demanding running water from the King Cetshwayo Municipality.

The municipality, in turn, blames sabotage by its former water service provider employees for the water supply interruptions.

In a statement, the municipality said Water and Sanitation Services South Africa workers were denying access to water infrastructure for municipal employees and the new contractor, Umgeni Water Board.

‘We experience acts of intimidation and threats from the former employees, who claim they are being kept out of employment.

‘Serious vandalism to municipal property have been reported. This resulted in the drainage of the water system, thus cutting the supply of water to people.’

Roads from eShowe, Melmoth, Nkandla and Empangeni towards Nkwaleni were blocked by violent protesters, who burned tyres, looted stationary vehicles and damaged infrastructure.
The situation has calmed down since last week Tuesday, with most roads remaining open.

Last week, KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala released a statement, stating that the provincial council is extremely concerned about the situation.

‘The constant service delivery disruptions plaguing these municipalities, and the impact on the lives of residents and investors alike, is worrying.

‘During the protests two weeks ago, 52 people were arrested.’
