Alcohol ban has positive effect – Zikalala
The number of Covid-19 cases is still rising in most parts of KZN, with 136 new deaths recorded over the past week
KZN Premier Sihle Zikala says the enhanced lockdown Level 3 regulations show signs of easing the pressure on hospitals as the number of Covid -19 cases continue to rise.
‘The ban on the sale of alcohol and the introduction of the 9pm–4am curfew seem to be having a positive effect, with a noticeable easing of pressure on our trauma, accident and emergency units in hospitals, as well as a drop in mortuary admissions of people who died from violent incidents.
‘In one Durban hospital, the number of trauma cases dropped from 155 the previous week to 120 last week since the introduction of the new measures. We expect a further reduction.
‘Police also reported a decline in serious crime over the past week,’ said Zikalala.
As of yesterday (Saturday), KZN recorded 40 045 positive cases, of which 28 574 were still active, while 136 new deaths were reported this week, bringing the death toll to 416.
Of those infected, 1 557 are healthcare workers.
In just one week, the province recorded 19 706 new Covid-19 cases.
KZN contributed 21% of the new cases reported nationally and continues to be the fourth highest in the country.
