By 7am the fire had been extinguished.

By 9am, the City of uMhlathuze electrical team had restored power to Alton and the CBD, while the suburbs’ lights came back on throughout the morning.

Despite this outage, the usual load shedding schedule remains in place.

There is also an electricity outage in Empangeni, affecting Zidedele and ZSM, after an electricity pole caught fire during sugar cane burning of a nearby farm.

According to uMhlathuze Municipality, power could be out in these areas for the duration of the day as the pole and all its elements must be replaced.
