Covid-19: Gatherings lead to drastic spike in KZN cases

After a wedding attended by a large group of guests, 25 subsequently tested positive for Covid-19

PARTIES and other public gatherings have contributed significantly to the spike of Covid-19 cases in KZN.

Premier Sihle Zikalala yesterday (Sunday) shared the latest coronavirus statistics recorded over the past week.

He said a number of infections were reported after people attended gatherings such as ceremonies and funerals.

‘In most of these engagements, measures such as social distancing and the wearing of masks have been disregarded.

‘In the past week, for example, we have been made aware of a sizeable group attending a wedding, after which 25 guests tested positive.’

Statistics 
As of today (Monday), KZN has recorded 25 572 positive cases, of which 17 765 are still active, while 286 deaths and 7 521 recoveries were noted.

A week ago, the province had 13 984 cases, of which 9 605 were active, while 182 deaths were reported.

This means that in just one week, KZN recorded almost 10 000 new cases.

‘The province is currently on a surge, recording more than 1 000 cases daily,’ said Zikalala.

‘The province contributed 14% of new cases reported nationally.

‘Among the 11 districts, eThekwini continues to report the majority of cases, accounting for 53% of the total cases.

‘eThekwini and its neighbouring district, uMgungundlovu, collectively account for 60% of the cases.

‘King Cetshwayo is also one of the districts showing a spike, recording 66 cases a day,’ said Zikalala.
