Fish poachers intercepted in Richards Bay

Seventy-six poached fish were released back into the water

QUICK intervention by the North Coast Anti-Poaching (NCAP) unit resulted in the safe release of 76 poached fish in Richards Bay last Wednesday night.

At about 8.30pm the unit received a tip-off about poachers deploying gill nets in the harbour, and on their arrival, found the poachers had beached their boats and fled into the mangrove swamps.

After searching the waters, NCAP members retrieved a massive 3.6km net.

As the gillnets had just been deployed, all the fish, ranging from grunters, perches, salmon, razor bellies, moonies, mullets, kingies, eals and garrick, were released.

To continue their anti-poaching efforts, NCAP appeals to the public to donate funds to assist with costs, such as fuel, safety equipment and maintenance of boats.
