Youth Day food security drive

Encouraging the youth of King Cetshwayo district to focus on agriculture to promote food security

YOUTH in the King Cetshwayo district have been encouraged to focus on agricultural and create home vegetable gardens to help promote food security during the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Youth Day last Tuesday, leaders visited different communities and delivered seedlings to entrepreneurs in Aquadene (Ward 26) and Ngwelezana (Ward 28) who were involved in communal gardens.

The delegation, comprising KZN legislature member Celiwe Madlopa, Councillor Nellenie Naidoo and Brackenham Youth League Chairperson, Sazi Msane, engaged with youth involved in gardening ventures and those promoting the ‘one garden, one home concept’ among communities.

They also teamed up with the Zululand Chamber of Business Foundation Covid -19 relief fund officials.

‘We can’t rely on handouts only as this is not sustainable. We have to educate and empower people to learn the skills and take care of themselves.

‘We have seen that poverty is not only found in black communities, but is evident in all suburbs. Even in affluent suburbs such as Meerensee people are suffering,’ Madlopa said.

‘We encourage all our young people to take ownership this month, even if it is only to establish a small plot of vegetables.’

This project is close to Naidoo’s heart as it addresses sustainability and boosts entrepreneurship.

‘Food security is key at this juncture. If we create a strong foundation, this project can grow. We also want to see our youth make agriculture fashionable,’ said Naidoo.
