According to reports, the two attackers approached Mkhwanazi under the pretense of needing him to verify proof of residence as they wanted to open a bank account.

When he asked the two men to return at about noon for the documents, they suddenly pulled guns and shot him several times.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park CEO, Sibusiso Bukhosini, described Mkhwanazi as a leader who would always go the extra mile while discharging his duties.

‘It is a great loss to all of us who worked with him. Induna Mkhwanazi was not only a respected traditional leader, but a true environmentalist who understood the need for co-existence between nature and humans.

‘He participated in various nature conservation programme, as well as the business development programme offered by iSimangaliso which has already benefitted 383 local businesses,’ Bukhosini said.

‘At the time of his passing he had grown from being a tour guide to becoming a business partner in a company, owning and running a boat cruise outfit at the Lake St Lucia section of the park.’
