Zululanders brace for heavy rains

Severe downpours expected tonight could lead to localised flooding

WHILE this morning (Wednesday) started with heavy downpours in many Zululand areas, rain is expected to continue and affect the entire region this afternoon through to tomorrow.

While inland provinces have been blanketed in snow, the eastern parts of the country will be subjected to much rain and cold temperatures.

KZN MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Sipho Hlomuka, has placed disaster management teams in the King Cetshwayo and uMkhanyakude districts on high alert as the severe weather may lead to localised flooding.

‘We appeal to communities residing in low-lying areas to seek shelter until the adverse weather conditions pass,’ said Hlomuka.

‘We also appeal to parents and teachers to ensure that pupils utilise safe routes to and from school.’

Disaster management teams will be monitoring all disaster-prone areas.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said the cause of these extreme conditions is a cut-off low system over the Free State.

By tomorrow, it is expected to slowly move north-eastwards.

SAWS said the system is expected to exit the country by Friday, resulting in warmer temperatures over the weekend.
