Covid-19 outbreak at Mthonjaneni Municipality

Coronavirus cases force the municipality to close down temporarily

THE uMthonjaneni Municipality has urged community members who visited the municipality over the past three weeks to contact the municipality or the Covid-19 hotline.

This after 18 municipal employees and councillors tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.

Mayor Sibonginkosi Biyela said all workers and councillors who have been in close contact with the infected employees have been advised to go into self-isolation for 14 days.

‘This is done so they can monitor themselves for flu-like symptoms. Should they show any symptoms, they will be tested for Covid-19.

‘All municipal buildings will be disinfected and will remain closed until further notice,’ said Biyela.

He said the municipality will continue to ensure that prescribed health protocols and hygiene measures are in place.

‘Social distancing is enforced, temperature testing is conducted and sanitisers are available at all facilities.

‘People not wearing masks are not allowed to enter municipal buildings, as dictated by the national regulations.’
