National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Richards Bay duty crew were placed on alert following a request for medical assistance from the vessel.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) had requested it to divert from deep sea towards Richards Bay while a government health official assessed the crewman’s condition.

He determined that the man had to be evacuated to hospital as soon as possible.

‘NSRI duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Richards Bay at 8:17pm, accompanied by Netcare 911 rescue paramedics,’ said NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon.

‘We rendezvoused with the vessel 7 nautical miles off-shore of Richards Bay. The paramedics and a NSRI rescue swimmer were transferred onto the vessel and the paramedics took over from the ship’s medical crew.

‘The patient was transferred onto our rescue craft without incident,’ he said.

The patient was taken to the NSRI base and then transported to hospital by ambulance.

‘All Covid-19 precautions and protocols were observed during the operation,’ said Lambinon.
