Man murdered over alleged affair

The suspect was arrested and led police to a shallow grave

JEALOUSY has been cited as the reason behind the death of a Manguzi man who was last week found buried in a shallow grave.

The deceased, Vusi Gumede (40) of the KwaSkhemele area in uMhlabuyalingana, went missing on 25 May after receiving a phone call from an unknown person.

His body was found a week later following the arrest of a 41-year old suspect, who led the police to the shallow grave in Maviyo.

The deceased’s cousin, Mduduzi Gumede, alleges that Vusi was kidnapped and killed by a well known local man who accused him of having an affair with his former wife.

‘Vusi received a call from a stranger who offered him a job. He left home and never returned.

‘We reported him missing at Manguzi SAPS,’ said Mduduzi.

He said after reporting the matter to the police, the deceased’s wife received vague SMS messages from the arrested suspect, saying she should not try and report the matter to the police.

‘We also heard that the suspect borrowed a firearm from his neighbour, saying he just wanted to scare my cousin.

uMkhanyakude cluster police spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, said the missing person’s docket was changed to murder.

‘The suspect had the deceased’s cellphone in his possession. He later confessed to the murder and took police to where the body was buried.’
