Mass community water projects launched in uMfolozi Municipality

A series of water intervention projects worth R123-million is set to benefit thousands of households across King Cetshwayo District

KING Cetshwayo District Mayor, Nonhle Mkhulisi officially launched two major grant-funded water projects in the uMfolozi Municipality last week.

Mkhulisi, who was accompanied by Deputy Mayor Lindokuhle Phungula, turned the sod on the R4.6-million Mbonambi Emergency Water Supply project whereby more than 20 households in Ward 4 will be supplied with water through a pipeline and 15 communal stand taps.

They also launched the R3.5-million Nkanyezi Package Plant project in Ward 10, which entails the construction of a 103 kilolitre package plant to purify water for over 35 households.

These form part of a series of water intervention projects worth R123-million set to benefit thousands of households across the district.

King Cetshwayo District will be prioritising, among others, the relocation of the Gingindlovu raw water abstraction point 2.5km along the Amatikulu River at a cost of R2-million.

R7-million has been allocated for various projects in the Nkandla municipal area, which include the installation of water pipelines, storage tanks and communal stand taps.

‘Another major project is the R45- million water conservation strategy to curb water loss ratios,’ said Mayor Mkhulisi.

‘This water conservation and demand strategy involves the analysis and assessment of the network, repair to infrastructure, installation of smart control valves and gadgets, as well as community educational drives to help reduce water losses.

‘These devices will monitor water consumption patterns as well. The project will also require community participation to save water and detect leaks,’ she said.
