Discrepancies cause delay in lifting fishing ban in Richards Bay

The City of uMhlathuze must first clarify specific issues before allowing recreational fishing

ZULULAND anglers still cannot celebrate as the City of uMhlathuze will not open designated areas for fishing until certain discrepancies have been clarified.

While recreational fishing, with the exception of charter fishing, is allowed under lockdown Level 3, the fact that the beaches are to remain closed has raised some questions.

‘The city is prioritising all facilities that are permitted to operate at Level 3, including fishing,’ said City of uMhlathuze Communications Manager, Mdu Ncalane.

‘However, the municipality is seeking clarity from the national departments of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), and Forestry and Fisheries, on certain discrepancies.’

The beaches remain closed as per regulations, and the city would undoubtedly designate specific fishing spots, but would only implement its plan of action once given the go-ahead from national government.

This comes after Monday’s announcement that recreational fishing, as well as hunting and self-drive game drives, would be allowed under Level 3.

Anglers would need the relevant and up-to-date permit to fish, and would be required to follow social distancing regulations, which means solitary fishing would be the order of the day.
