RBM provides mega food relief for needy communities

The donation is part of RBM's R1.5-million commitment to assist with critical food supply in the King Cetshwayo District

AS PART of ongoing efforts to support families in distress during the Covid-19 pandemic, Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) last week delivered food parcels totalling R900 000 to the uMfolozi and uMhlathuze municipalities.

The donation is part of RBM’s R1.5-million commitment to assist with critical food supply in the King Cetshwayo District.

‘With demand for food assistance rising at an extraordinary rate as the effects of the lockdown bite deeper, we had to move fast to feed many hungry men, women and children.

‘Our donation of food is a basic human need that is required even more as we are battling the spread of the coronavirus,’ said RBM Managing Director, Werner Duvenhage.

Welcoming the much-needed donation, Mayor of uMfolozi, Councillor Smangaliso Mgenge said it will go a long way to feeding vulnerable groups within the municipality.

‘We value the partnership with RBM. Partnerships with corporates and government departments are very important because we need all resources to save lives and fight this pandemic.

‘There are many families that are not receiving grants and have no income. The food parcels will relieve their hunger,’ he said.

This was reiterated by uMhlathuze Mayor, Councillor Mduduzi Mhlongo who commended the mining giant for its contribution to the city’s food bank.

He said this initiative mitigates the negative impact that the coronavirus has dealt communities, in particular the vulnerable groups.

RBM’s donation of food follows their handover of critical supplies including hand sanitisers, masks and gloves totalling R100 000 to community health clinics in the district.

The company has also sponsored study aids to assist grade four to seven learners in its host communities.
