Another toxic notch in Fearless Fred’s belt

The going was tough but the huge Black mamba was successfully captured and released

MAMBA mating season has proven busy for ‘Fearless’ Fred Lubbe as his most recent in a string of snake removals was a massive black mamba at Empangeni Railway Station.

When Lubbe was called out on Wednesday and informed that the snake in question was in the trees, he highly doubted it would be a mamba, but was soon convinced on seeing the snake for himself.

‘Boy was I chuffed to see this huge black mamba in the tree, laying across some branches,’ said Lubbe.

‘I had to walk around into a bushy area that had lots of hip-high grass, while underfoot was a thick layer of leaves and branches that my feet were sinking into, up to my shins.’

Thinking mostly about whether or not this snake had a mate somewhere in the long grass, Lubbe slowly made his way to the one in the tree, to prevent it from slithering along the branches.

‘I managed to get a nice hold of him with my tongs and then it was a tussle with this very powerful snake to get him necked – holding him behind the head to get full control over him.

‘There was no way I could walk out of that bush not having him necked as the going was tough.’

The snake was released in a safe place.
