Premier promises defaulters will ‘feel the heat’ as KZN Covid-19 numbers rise, including King Cetshwayo District

‘The concern we have is that our people still do not heed the call of social distancing and other precautions,' - KZN Premier

This was announced by KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala, who today (Sunday) briefed the country on the development of the pandemic since the beginning of Level 4 lockdown.

In his breakdown, Zikalala said that 608 people have so far recovered, 656 are active cases and 43 have passed away.

The district breakdown of positive Covid-19 cases is:
eThekwini: 840

uMkhanyakude: 22
Ugu: 19

KZN has been recording an average of 19 cases daily with eThekwini and Ilembe being the highest contributing districts.

‘There are 54 new cases that were reported in the province just yesterday alone,’ said Zikalala.

‘KZN has a total of 43 deaths recorded in five of the 11 districts – eThekwini District has recorded the highest death rate of 80 percent (of the 43) followed by King Cetshwayo District at eight percent and Ugu District at five percent.’

As of yesterday, there were 135 hospitalised patients: 46 admitted in the private sector and 92 in the public sector.

There were 13 patients that needed to be in intensive care.

Zikalala said community screenings helped government identify more cases.

‘We also ensured that when there are roadblocks, healthcare workers participate to screen and, if needs be, test people during these exercises.

‘The concern we have is that our people still do not heed the call of social distancing and other precautions.

‘We would like to encourage them to observe these protocols.’

Zikalala said government was in possession of a dossier that lists a number of private firms that are acting in contravention of the Level 4 regulations.

‘We want to warn these companies, along with all those individuals who are contravening the regulations of the lockdown, that from tomorrow (Monday) onwards, you will feel the heat.

‘Our law enforcement agencies, accompanied by the SA National Defence Force, will be out in full force, taking the necessary action against offenders.

‘We want all our compatriots to be clear about one thing: we will take stringent action.’
