Schools warned against premature reopening

The proposed date for the gradual return of learners is 1 June.

THE Department of Basic Education today (Thursday) issued a warning against the premature reopening of schools.

This follows reports of some independent and public schools preparing to reopen and receive learners much earlier than permitted.

‘In some schools teachers have already began reporting for duty and parents meetings held where plans were announced to have learners back in school this month..

‘This will not be permitted as the department is still finalising Covid-19 school compliance protocols.

‘Uniform standards will be applicable in schools as part of the measures put in place to protect learners and teachers, prevent infection and save the academic year,’ said Director General for Basic Education, Mathanzima Mweli.

Minister Angie Motshekga last week said office staff would gradually return to work from 4 May, with school management teams returning on 11 May and teachers on 18 May.

The proposed date for the gradual return of learners is 1 June.

‘The minister has already indicated how she intends to have schools reopening, and until a final decision is made no school can open and receive learners.

‘I therefore urge schools to familiarise themselves with all the regulations and directives to ensure compliance,’said Mweli.
