eSikhaleni dog tests positive for rabies

The dog was reported as potentially rabid and samples were sent for testing

THE dog euthanised in eSikhaleni last week was confirmed to have been rabies-positive.

The dog was reported as potentially rabid and samples were sent for testing.

The Richard’s Bay SPCA assisted in collecting the stray dog which had entered a resident’s garden.

SPCAs nationwide play an important role in the fight against rabies. If you are able to, please support any of the local SPCAs with either a cash or food donation during these difficult times.

If bitten or scratched
In the event of a bite or scratch from a suspected rabid animal, wash the wounds with running water and soap for 10 minutes.

This is very important to kill the virus in the wound.

Get to a doctor, hospital or clinic for a course of four vaccinations as soon as possible.

Do not let a clinic turn you away, but insist on speaking to someone who can advise you about vaccination and treatment.

If the clinic does not have vaccine, ask them to find out for you the nearest one that does.

If you have a bite you will also need injections of rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) into the wound.
