Lockdown defaulters in the dock

The two minibus taxis with GP registrations were carrying 15 passengers each and were travelling from Johannesburg to Ulundi

ABOUT 30 people were arrested in Ulundi last week for contravening the national lockdown regulations.

It is reported that two minibus taxis with GP registrations were carrying 15 passengers each. The two taxis were travelling from Johannesburg to Ulundi and were stopped by Ulundi police along the P700.

This took place despite government’s directive that no person is allowed to move from one province to another.

Zululand police cluster spokesperson, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said both drivers and their passengers were arrested on the scene for failing to comply with lockdown regulations.

‘They were charged for defying the Disaster Management Act regulation. Twenty six of them were released after they paid their admission fee while the other four were kept in custody for failure to make payment. They appeared at the Ulundi Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and were further remanded in custody,’ said Gwala.

Gwala said these four suspects are expected to make another court appearance soon.
