Men arrested with counterfeit cigarettes remanded in custody

They had smuggled counterfeit cigarettes to the value of R1.6-million across the border

THREE men arrested near Hluhluwe in possession of counterfeit cigarettes to the value of R1.6-million last week, have been remanded in custody.

After entering South Africa from Mozambique via the Kosi Bay border post and traversing through the Phinda Private Game Reserve, the men in their three-vehicle convoy were stopped and searched at the game reserve’s gate after police received a tip-off.

The Hluhluwe SAPS crime prevention unit, together with Nyati Anti-Poaching and Alpha Security, conducted the operation.

The suspects were arrested and charged with possession of counterfeit goods and for contravening the Disaster Management Act.

They appeared in the Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court on Monday and Tuesday, and were remanded in custody until Tuesday next week for further investigation.
