Severe weather expected across KwaZulu-Natal

All disaster management teams have been placed on high alert

THE KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has placed all disaster management teams on standby as severe weather conditions are expected tomorrow (Tuesday) and into Wednesday.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) this afternoon forecast severe thunderstorms to hit north-eastern KZN from 2pm tomorrow, with the bad weather expected to continue into the early hours of Wednesday morning.

For the rest of KZN, heavy rain which might cause localised flooding is expected from 11am to 11pm tomorrow, while light snow is a possibility for the peaks of the southern Drakensberg tomorrow and Wednesday.

The various disaster management teams within KZN’s districts will monitor the situation, especially those susceptible to incidents.

‘We appeal to all residents to heed the warning as issued by the authorities,’ said Cogta MEC, Sipho Hlomuka.

‘Our teams will be monitoring the situation as large parts of our province could potentially be affected.’

The department has appealed to residents to contact their local ward councillors or their nearest disaster centre should any incidents occur.
