Former Zululander captures April super moon on camera

This month's super moon is said to be the biggest and brightest of the year

PROFESSIONAL photographer and former Zululander, Nobby Clarke, caught Tuesday night’s ‘pink moon’ on camera with amazing clarity from his home in Gauteng.

Said to be the biggest and brightest super moon of the year, barring no cloud cover, it was most visible in South Africa at 4.30am on Wednesday.

Super moons occur when the moon is within 90% of perigee, which is its closest approach to earth in orbit.

The ‘pink moon’ name is said to come from native north American wildflowers that bloom in the northern hemisphere in spring time, which is April, at around the same time of the super moon.

The moon itself does not appear pink in colour, but can appear golden as it rises.

There are usually 12 full moons in a year because one occurs each month, but in 2020, October will have two full moons – one on 1 October and then again on 31 October.

Two full moons in the same month is known as a ‘blue moon’.
