Public transport hours extended to help grant beneficiaries

PUBLIC transport operating hours were relaxed on Sunday to make provision for social grant beneficiaries to collect their pension and grants payouts.

Effective until Friday this week, buses and taxis will be permitted to operate from 5am to 8pm and social distancing must be exercised by all those using public transport.

The public transport directives were amended by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula to accommodate grant beneficiaries.

They have been requested to carry their identity documents and South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) cards when travelling on public transport, to assist law enforcement efforts.

Meanwhile, on Sunday evening Richards Bay Taxi Association chairperson, Sibusiso Nzuza, said all taxi operations have remained suspended in the area since Friday.

He confirmed that operations were put on hold by the South African Taxi Council’s provincial chairperson, Boy Zondi, until the leadership met with the transport minister to discuss the lack of feasibility to reduce the number of commuters per load.
