Temporary shelter set up in Richards Bay to accommodate the homeless

HOMELESS people will be provided a safe haven during the countrywide lockdown thanks to the relentless lobbying of a group of non-profit organisations (NPOs) in Richards Bay.

After several days of non-stop interaction with government departments and local municipalities, a breakthrough was established on Sunday night when it was confirmed that a temporary shelter would be set up in Richards Bay to accommodate the vulnerable.

The homeless have been requested to gather at the Hope on These Streets building (127 Dollar Drive) at 9am on Monday (30 March) with their belongings to undergo screenings and health checks, which will include Covid-19 testing, by the Department of Health.

After the screening process they will be moved to the community hall where they will be accommodated for the night while numbers are finalised.

Local charities Hope on These Streets, Open Doors and Freedom Generation, will provide meals.

The organisations have appealed to those who have contact with the homeless to inform them to go for testing and bring along their belongings on Monday..

Donations of food or any other contributions are welcomed and Caroline Pitout can be contacted on 072 1255983.
