Minibus taxis suspend services in city on day 1 of lockdown

Reduced operating hours and restrictions on passenger numbers make operating unfeasible

PUBLIC transport came to a standstill in Richards Bay and surrounding areas today (Friday) after taxi associations were told to suspend all operations, a directive from the South African Taxi Council’s provincial chairperson.

This is according to Richards Bay Taxi Association spokesperson Sibusiso Nzuza, who confirmed that operations were put on hold until SANTACO chairperson Boy Zondi meets with Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula to discuss the matter.

‘The taxi leadership was not engaged on this matter and until such time as those discussions take place, we have been instructed to suspend all services.

‘We were informed that operating hours would be from 5am to 9am and 4pm to 8pm daily and the number of commuters per load would be reduced, which is not feasible.

‘We hope to have a way forward by the end of the weekend at least,’ Nzuza said
