Red Cross team educates the vulnerable

Their task over the next few weeks will be to visit remote areas in the uMhlathuze district where access to health care services is limited

THE Red Cross organisation has trained 21 Zululand volunteers to educate communities about the coronavirus.

Their task over the next few weeks will be to visit remote areas in the uMhlathuze district where access to health care services is limited.

Residents will be educated on how to take preventative measures to avoid contracting the virus, as well as the symptoms that may present themselves.

Branch development officer, Sibusiso Mahlangu, said it was important for vulnerable people with few resources to be educated on how to stay safe.

‘We are focusing on prevention and we are also teaching people how to properly wash their hands using only soap and water.

‘This is because most underprivileged people do not have access to quality hand sanitisers and they cannot afford to stock up on it because the prices of these have drastically increased.

‘It may seem basic, but we have to teach people how to survive with what is available to them.’

The first point of call was the Empangeni taxi rank, where Red Cross volunteers spent Wednesday morning educating commuters.
