UPDATE: Pupils allowed to leave school after Richards Bay coronavirus lockdown

A note has been issued to parents outlining that they must have their children tested at Ngwelezana Hospital at their own expense or via their medical aid

PARENTS who waited anxiously all morning while Richards Bay Primary School was effectively in lockdown, are now able to take their children home as the pupils are being allowed to leave class by class.

A note has been issued to parents outlining that they must have their children tested at Ngwelezana Hospital at their own expense or via their medical aid.

The school will reportedly not reopen tomorrow.

Scores of anxious parents gathered outside the school since early this morning after news surfaced that a Richards Bay Primary School pupil had tested positive for coronavirus – the first known case in Richards Bay and Zululand.

The child and both parents, as well as the doctor who treated the child, are in quarantine.

No one was allowed in and out of the school premises as a team from the Department of Health met with school authorities.

Fearful parents had expressed discontent as information from authorities was not immediately forthcoming.

Police earlier calmed upset parents informing them of the processes are under way.

The public is advised to call the coronavirus hotline on 0800 029 999 with any suspected cases, or to report or obtain information relevant to the pandemic
