Ezemvelo allays fears of elephant herd cull

Coetzee was trampled to death by two bull elephants while he and four men herded the elephants back towards Mawana after they had broken the fence and entered one of the neighbouring farms

EZEMVELO KZN Wildlife has no intentions of destroying the elephant herd roaming outside the Mawana Farm
near Glückstadt, of which two elephant bulls killed ranger Beyers Coetsee (45) just over a week ago.

This is according the the organisation’s communications manager, Musa Mntambo.

A compliance order has been issued to the farm.

‘We never take a decision to destroy animals lightly,’ Mntambo said.

‘Our mandate is to conserve wildlife and will only destroy an animal to prevent loss of human life.

‘When such a decision is taken, it is always supported by applicable legislation.’
