Stage two load shedding came into effect at 9pm last night and was upped to stage three in a bid to replenish emergency reserves.
Eskom said diesel reserves for open-cycle gas turbines and water reserves for the hydro-pumped storage schemes were used extensively yesterday and last night to supplement the shortage of capacity.
Unplanned outages are high, at 10 612MW, the system is vulnerable and any change to the system may require a shift in load shedding stage.
