Power system stabilising, no load-shedding expected this weekend

Here are some tips to save electricity and saving money on bills

AS the power system shows signs of stabilising, with no unit trips reported yesterday (Thursday), Eskom does not expect to load-shed tonight or over the weekend.

In a statement released last night, the power utility said it managed to preserve diesel stock after not needing to operate the open cycle gas turbines yesterday.

The pumped storage schemes were only moderately utilised as there was adequate generation capacity to meet the day’s electricity demand.

‘No load-shedding is expected [today] as there is adequate generation capacity to meet demand and emergency reserves are available to supplement capacity should the need arise,’ said Eskom.

Today, Eskom said the level of breakdowns was slowly decreasing, with unplanned outages at 11 374MW as of this morning.

‘The current performance of the system has allowed Eskom to preserve its emergency resources.’

Tips to conserve electricity and save money on bills:
• Switch off lights in unoccupied rooms
• Unplug all appliances not in use
• Don’t leave computers and other electronic devices on standby as this uses up to 15% of the power they use when switched on
• Keep curtains and blinds open during the day to optimise natural light
• When using air conditioning, keep it at 23 degrees C
