Huge spike in rape cases in Zululand

In the past three weeks alone, 10 rape cases have been reported in the region

WHILE the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children are being observed nationwide,
more women in the Zululand region are becoming victims of sexual assault.

In the past three weeks alone, 10 rape cases have been reported in the region.

Four of the rape cases were committed against children, with the youngest being a two-year-old who was allegedly raped by her neighbour two weeks ago.

Amidst the huge national outcry and campaigns against gender-based violence, sexual violence remains at a disturbing high, with Empangeni classified as one of the top 10 hot spots in the country according to the 2018/19
national crime statistics.

Last week a 20-year-old woman was raped by her uncle in Makyane.

It was reported that the suspect told the young woman that she should accompany him to his girlfriend’s house.

When they arrived at the premises they found no one there. The 35-year-old man then raped his niece and was
arrested shortly after the incident.

In Enseleni, another young woman was raped next to a tavern by a man known to her. The man has not yet been arrested.

In another incident, a 15-year-old was raped in Ebomvini outside Ngwelezana. The suspect been arrested.
