Wet coal the reason for Eskom implementation of stage four load shedding

Stage four calls for 4 000MW to be rotationally load shed nationally at a given period

AS at 2pm today (Friday), load shedding has moved from stage two to stage four.

This is as a result of the power utility losing additional generation units this morning, coupled with other units not having returned to service as scheduled.

Stage four load shedding is expected to last until 6am tomorrow, and Eskom will communicate any changes to the situation.

‘In addition, the increase in the load shedding stage is intended, among other things, to cater for unplanned further trips, and to create capacity to replenish water reserves for the pumped storage schemes,’ said Eskom.

Incessant rain has reportedly caused coal-handling problems as a result of wet coal at some power stations, which has in turn led to generation units being unable to produce power.
