Zululand’s Mzuvukile soccer team stands tall

The team represented South Africa at the recent Danone World Cup Under 12 soccer tournament in Spain

DESPITE being hammered at the recent Danone World Cup Under 12 soccer tournament in Spain, the Mzuvukile Primary School soccer team is still walking tall.

Coach Jimmy Makhoba said the fact that the team represented South Africa after being crowned national champions, was reason enough to hold their heads high.

In their first game they lost 0-5 to England, but in their last game showed much improvement by holding China to a 2-2 draw.

‘Although the defeats were disappointing, we view our participation as a valuable learning curve.

We are now firmly focused on our next challenge in the VW Junior Masters Under 12 tournament, which will be held on Thursday in Johannesburg.

‘We will go there and use the knowledge gained in Spain to improve on our game and make our mark.

‘I would like to request SAFA to organise an Under 12 soccer league in the country in which we will be able to play competitive football on a weekly basis.

‘That is the recipe for success for European teams. They play regularly,’ said Makhoba.

Mzuvukile Primary School Principal Bongi Xulu was happy with her boys’ performance.

‘Given the pedigree of the tournament, the boys did their best. A victory would have been a bonus.

‘I wish to express my gratitude to all the sponsors who made the trip possible.’
