Taxi drivers threaten to blockade the R34 between Empangeni and Nkwalini

The protest is in connection with a road collapse which is yet to be repaired two years later

MOTORISTS using the R34 between Nkwalini and Empangeni should brace themselves for possible disruptions this week as local taxi drivers are planning to blockade the road.

This is in protest of the P230 road which is yet to be fixed after partially collapsing two years ago.

Local councillor Sipho Ntombela said they were concerned about the state of the road which poses a danger to motorists.

‘Last year officials of the Department of Transport and Environmental Affairs promised to fix the road and bridge, but nothing has been done.

‘Early this year we sent the department photos to highlight the danger, but there has still been no response,’ said Ntombela.

A taxi driver said the government was ‘undermining rural communities’.

‘If this was in an urban area, the issue would have been resolved long ago, but because it is a rural area, they will wait until a major accident occurs.’

Efforts to obtain comment from the Department of Transport proved unsuccessful.
