Farmers rejoice as rains arrive

Although some residents may feel the rains are late this year, it appears that good rains arriving in November are not that unusual

GOOD, seasonal that fell over Zululand over the past week brought relief to farmers who have had to deal with higher than normal temperatures and windy conditions.

The timely rain has come as dam levels were dropping sharply, with above normal consumption due to the high temperatures.

With the heat and the good rainfall, sugar cane farmers are expecting a good crop when it matures next year, while dams in conservation areas will also provide much needed relief to the game.

The rains have as yet not impacted on the dams in the region, but levels are expected to start rising soon.

The Charter’s Creek area recorded the highest rainfall over the last week with 111.4mm being recorded at Nyalazi, half of which fell on Tuesday.

Further South, KwaMbonambi and Dukuduku measured 74.4mm and 89.8mm over the seven day period respectively, with 34mm and 46.6mm falling over a 24-hour period on Tuesday.

Inland, at Melmoth, between 72mm and 84mm fell during the week.

In the Nkwalini valley and eShowe, falls of 8.6mm and 9.7mm were measured on Tuesday respectively.

Just on 80mm has been received in these areas for the month to date.

Further north and south the rainfall dropped off with Pongola receiving 54.9mm and Gingindlovu 70.8mm for the month.

Even further south, Mt Edgecombe received a total of 181.6mm for the month to-date.
