THE drowning of a 19-year-old University of Zululand student, Mphatho Mseleku, has shocked the institution.

The first year Bachelor of Commerce student drowned in the campus swimming pool last Friday night while trying to escape the hot weather.

According to sources, the incident occurred at about 8pm when Mseleku and his friend went for a swim.

‘When they arrived at the pool, Mseleku jumped into the water, but did not resurface It was dark because of the load-shedding, and his friend was unable to locate him under the water,’ the source said.

Students Representative Administrator, Nontobeko Zulu, said they will urge the university management to fence and drain the pool.

King Cetshwayo Cluster Police spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, said an inquest docket was registered at Mtunzini SAPS for investigation.

‘Police divers retrieved the body at about 11.30pm and he was declared dead at the scene,’ he said.

Attempts to obtain comment from the university’s spokesperson were unsuccessful.
