SPCA low on food stocks

'As things stand, we don't have enough dog food to get through the weekend,' - SPCA Manager Shelly Prinsloo

WITH full kennels and a weekend of fireworks anticipated, which could lead to a high number of strays brought in, the Richards Bay SPCA is appealing to the public for help with their dog food stocks.

‘As things stand, we don’t have enough dog food to get through the weekend,’ said SPCA Manager Shelly Prinsloo.

By Tuesday afternoon, the SPCA had only two large bags of dog food in its food store and three bags of cat food.

‘We are desperate for animal food because, apart from being unable to feed all the dogs in our kennels beyond the next few days, with fireworks expected this weekend, we are anticipating more dogs to be brought in as is usually the case during fireworks season.’

Dogs and cats that scare from fireworks often flee the properties on which they live in an effort to run away from the noise.

Often they are found wandering the streets, and are at risk of being hit by vehicles.

‘We urge owners to keep all their pets indoors during the fireworks.’

Anyone willing to donate food to the SPCA can drop it off at their premises in Bayview Boulevard, Meerensee.
